Combined, the faculty of the Big Canvas Education Center have decades of improv performance and teaching experience gathered from all around the country. Through short-form improv games, our training will impart important skills for improvisation that will carry into your daily life!
LONG FORM CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
SHORT FORM LEVEL 1 - BEGINNING IMPROV
Did you know that improv skills are also life skills? See how listening and agreement are the cornerstones of
communications and hilarious improv. You’ll perform improv games like you see at Big Canvas shows or on Whose Line is it Anyway?.
For those of you that are starting with Big Canvas
SHORT FORM LEVEL 2 - GAME STYLES
Build up your arsenal of improv games by learning games with different styles. Each week we’ll cover new games and
new topics and styles of improv.
SHORT FROM LEVEL 3 - CHARACTER AND SCENIC GAMES
Watch your game play really take off by adding character and scenic elements. Plus, you get to play two new games
each week.
SHORT FORM LEVEL 4 - ADVANCED GAMEPLAY
We’ll learn more games played at Big Canvas and other theaters. Plus we’ll spend time on honing stage craft and
adding professional polish to your stage skills. By the end of level four, students will experience more than 60
different improv games, and will officially graduate from Big Canvas’ Short Form Program.
SHORT FORM LEVEL 5 - POST-GRADUATE PERFORMANCE LEVEL
Learn additional elements of performing on a short-form team. These include putting together run orders, running
rehearsals, giving and receiving notes, interacting with the crowd, and hosting games and shows.
LONG FORM CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
LONG FORM LEVEL 1 - LONG FORM INTRODUCTION
Big Canvas is proud to introduce students to its brand new long-form improv classes. This level learns the theory and
history of improvisation. You’ll learn how to create improvised scenes from nothing but an audience suggestion.
LONG FORM LEVEL 2 - CHARACTERS
Build on Level 1 and develop unique characters and play them in scenes. This class helps you find your own, unique
comedic voice and begins building a group-mind for your class.
LONG FROM LEVEL 3 - SCENIC
Learn more about the scenic environment, while connecting scenes together. Build momentum in your scenes as we
concentrate on two-person scenes. Continue to explore the power of group mind of an improv ensemble
LONG FORM LEVEL 4 - THE HAROLD
Put it all together in a long form show called “The Harold.” This form is taught across the globe in theaters big and small. The Harold brings in all the elements of long-form into a 20-minute show.
LONG FORM LEVEL 5 - POST-GRADUATE PERFORMANCE LEVEL
We’ll explore additional long-form formats and hone stage skills. This level is much more personalized to individual
students needs and strengths.
